My Horror Themed Mood Board
In class, our next assignment was to create a mood board based on our favorite film genre (also one that we might be considering for the video that we have to create). I am a really big horror/ suspense movie fan, especially ones like The Conjuring or the Saw movies. I decided to do a horror based mood board since I was already a huge fan of the genre, plus I think it could be a really good genre to focus on for the video for our project for this class.
My mood board:
For my mood board, I decided that one of the best ways for me to create it was to include some of the more recognizable movies and characters in the horror industry, as well as some of my favorite. For the characters, I included Pennywise from the film It!, Samara from The Ring, Chucky, Michael Myers from Halloween, and more. I believe that character design is one of the more significant components when it comes to horror films, as the characters, especially the villains, have such unique character design. Not only through their outfits, but also through backstory and relevance to the plot of the movie. For locations, I included the house from The Conjuring, the background from The Exorcist, and the "famous" hallway from The Shining. Setting in horror films tend to have significance to the plot, so I thought it would be important to include. I decided to also focus on posters from films, as they show multiple components of misc en scene in one photo, such as props, characters, setting, and sometimes more.
Horror movies have always interested me, as the plots and characters that horror movies create/ are based on are always extremely interesting and creative. Especially now after learning a lot more about the filming of movies, and all the different components that go into the creation of a film, I think that horror is a lot more dynamic and unique than I already previously thought. Horror movies use a lot of misc en scene to create the perfect movie that includes the dynamic between the characters, story plot, and setting. I've also now realized how many different angles and shots are used in horror films, especially in order to create or emphasize the unsteadiness, creepy, eerie feeling that horror films bring to the table. Lighting and sound are other pieces of creating film that I believe horror films do a great job at embodying. One of the biggest components of horror films that are mainly focused on are costumes and setting, however there is a multitude of "invisible" elements of film that I know see and can pick out. It is evident that horror films are a great example of everything that I have learned in the class so far, as well as components that I probably haven't learned about yet.
