Our newest assignment has been to create a sound story, which was a completely new experience for me and my group member Aaliyah. The sound story is supposed to be able to tell a story to the audience with no visuals (aka sound accompanied by a lovely black screen), which I thought was a really cool concept. This project's goal is to show us how important and impactful sound is in film, even though we may not notice it. Focusing a project on simply sound allowed Aaliyah and I to really appreciate the mass amounts of efforts that go into making sound, editing sound, etc.
When coming up with a concept for the sound story itself, Aaliyah and I half had a few ideas that we ran through before coming up with the one that we ended up using. When I first thought of sound in film, my mind directly went to outdoorsy concepts like walking through a forest, adventuring in the ocean, and ideas like that. We decided that it would be too complicated to create those sounds ourself, so we looked into other ideas. Aaliyah came up with the idea to do kitchen sounds, mainly because there are a countless amount of sounds to choose from that are made in a kitchen, and it would be one of the more easier options. However, we decided to not do that one either. So what did we choose?
Aaliyah and I decided that we could do a sound story that focused on sounds that us (as students) hear daily: class change and the ambiance within a classroom. Not only would this concept be easy for us to record and create, but it would be a fun challenge for us to mimic layers of sound that we are so used to hearing. We wanted to create a sound story in which the layering sounded so real that it sounded familiar to our classmates.
Here is our sound story:
We also had to make at least four of the sounds ourselves, so here is the video recording of me and Aaliyah making some of the sounds that were implemented into the sound story itself:
Aaliyah and I were partners for this project, and because we were already friends beforehand, it was easy to work alongside each other and complete this assignment. Aaliyah had some previous experience with recording audios for yearbook, so she wanted to record most of the audios from the project.
I can't comment much on the difficulty of creating the sounds, because although I did create a few, Aaliyah created the majority of the sounds for our group. On the other hand, I did the editing of the sound story, which was quite the experience. Considering that I have never EVER edited sound IN MY LIFE, editing a collection of sounds to a point where it was both comprehendible and not the worst thing on the planet, was very interesting. This project literally was the only reason that I've ever opened iMovie. Literally. But it was a fun experience tbh. Putting the sounds onto the iMovie project wasn't that difficult, but LAYERING the sounds was a different story. It took me a while to figure out how to change the volume levels of each clip, and also to figure out how to change the volume to where it would lower when a new sound was introduced. All in all, the project gave me a new respect for anyone that edits professionally or for a job, but it the end I think that Aaliyah and I's group effort created a pretty good first attempt at a sound story. :)
In class, our next assignment was to create a mood board based on our favorite film genre (also one that we might be considering for the video that we have to create). I am a really big horror/ suspense movie fan, especially ones like The Conjuring or the Saw movies. I decided to do a horror based mood board since I was already a huge fan of the genre, plus I think it could be a really good genre to focus on for the video for our project for this class. My mood board: For my mood board, I decided that one of the best ways for me to create it was to include some of the more recognizable movies and characters in the horror industry, as well as some of my favorite. For the characters, I included Pennywise from the film It! , Samara from The Ring , Chucky, Michael Myers from Halloween , and more. I believe that character design is one of the more significant components when it comes to horror films, as the characters, especially the villains, have such uniqu...
Here is my Creative Critical Reflection! Here I dissected each component of my film based off of four questions: How does your product use or challenge conventions and how does it represent social groups or issues? How does your product engage with audiences and how would it be distributed as a real media text? How did your production skills develop throughout this project? How did you integrate technologies- software, hardware and online – in this project? This was one of the very last components of this project and my experience with it, so I hope that you enjoyed this as much as I did! Kayla Jencic's CCR
Color theory has always been something that has inspired me in the world of media. I loved learning about the pure impact and meaning that color can have in film, and how something as simple as the color of someone's shirt at the right moment can mean so much. I'm glad to say that our group used the color theory when it came to the outfits of each character, something that I am actually REALLY proud of. It's always been something so interesting to me, and being able to implement it into our own film was just an amazing feeling. Felicity Rox My character, AKA Felicity, wears a purple sweater vest, a black skirt, leggings, and ballet flats with bright silver jewelry and a silver headband. The reasoning behind her outfit ties back to color theory. Her outfit consists mainly of elegant colors like purple and black- both of which are associated with luxury, powe...
