Costuming

     Costume designing is a very important, yet overlooked aspect of film. I believe that the right costumes can effectively show a character's persona in an innovative way, which is why I personally was so excited to create and choose the costumes for our film opening with my group members. Because we will have 6 very different characters showcased in our film, it is important that we creatively choose their outfit, understanding the backstory behind each one. 

Jason Smith- Jock

Jason Smith is the character that will be played by Jacob. Jason is a sporty, athletic character that also is a hothead. In order to show both of these important characteristics through Jason's clothes, we have given him a letterman jacket accompanied by some jeans and basketball shoes, although the shoes may not be shown in our film. As shown in the picture, the letterman jacket is the color red. The reason that we chose to match Jason's character with the color red is because the color read symbolizes both vigor and anger, characteristics that Jason will most definitely embody. For accessories, we will have him wear a class ring (something on the more bulky side). For hairstyle, we are thinking to let Jacob keep the hairstyle that he has, which is a more loose, flowey hairstyle because it already matches the persona that he will be embodying for the film. 

Felicity Rox- the Rich/Preppy Girl

Felicity Rox will be played by myself. For her outfit, we have collectively decided to have her wear a more extravagant outfit than the other characters, to show her wealth. This will consist of a fancy sweater and a skirt, dark leggings, potentially with a set of heels or flats to top the outfit off. Because she is a rich girl, we believe that having a more put together and "rich-looking" outfit will be an easy way to show the audience what she is like before she even says a word. There are many TV shows out there that have characters with similar stereotypes, such as Gossip Girl. Her outfit will consist mainly of elegant colors such as purple or black. The color purple is associated with royalty, luxury, power, wealth, extravagance, and more. It is also a color that is associated with a statement of independence, which is why we decided to use the color purple with her outfit. The color black symbolizes prestige, formality, elegance and importance, further emphasizing characteristics of Felicity. Accessories are also something that will be important to her character, and we are going to have her wear a headband and a pearl necklace with additional bracelets to show her wealth and tie the outfit together. Something else that we were thinking about doing for her character specifically is giving her a mirror to hold and constantly look at throughout her interrogation, reflecting her self-obsession. This could be something small, like a pocket mirror. Her hair will not be tied up, and will rather just be loose and held with the headband. 

Simon Peters- the Nerd

Simon Peters will be played by Tyler. Simon is a "nerd"; he is a more timid character, the stereotypical student that does well in class, being generally and introvert and quite reserved. However, our group tried to stay away from the weird nerd stereotype  and aimed for the more dialed-down version. His outfit will consist of a light blue sweater vest along with khaki pants and some dress shoes. Besides the idea of dressing like a "nerd" character, we did use color theory to decide more in depth on the outfit, just like we have for the other characters. The reason for the light blue sweater vest is because blue is a color that embodies wisdom, intelligence, and intuition, further adding onto the "nerd" stereotype that Simon/Tyler plays into. In terms of hair style, we are letting Tyler keep his hairstyle as well, which should work in the end because the outfit is what really portrays his character the most regardless, not really a specific hairstyle. 

Myah Flores- the Artsy Girl

Myah Flores is the Artsy Girl that will be played by Aaliyah. Besides being artsy, she is also going to be the emotional "trainreck" out of all the characters in the film. Her outfit will consist of overalls, and old green t-shirt, and some converse with a jacket possibly tied around her waist. I feel as though her outfit is going to be the closest to portraying her personality, even though the other characters do have a good match as well. Her overalls are going to have a splatter of paint, both literally showing the artsy side of her character, but also alluding to the "mess" that she is (in this case emotionally). Her outfit will consist of mainly light and colorful tones, showing more of her creativity and imagination. For accessories, she will have a beanie, as well as some additional jewelry, potentially made out of string or such for additional creative points. For her hairstyle, Myah Flores is going to have messy braids, which we think also correlate with her persona really well. Green will also be another color showcased in her outfit, as the t-shirt she will be wearing is a light shade of green, other than showing her imagination, I think that the light green also portrays an inventive, logical, and healing, which ties to the emotional side of her character. 

The Police Officers/Detectives (TBD)

Because our film focuses on the idea that there are investigations revolving around a crime that happened, we are obviously going to have a police officer there to interact with the different suspects. The police officer will have a more typical outfit that can be seen by someone working in that workforce, consisting of the colors blue, gray, and black, with a suit and dress shoes or something of the like. For props, the cops will most likely have handcuffs that add detail to their outfits. 

The Detective will also be an important part of the film, and for their outfit we are thinking of including a suit-like attire, possibly accompanied by a trench coat or something of the sort. For props, the detective will have a briefcase as well as the documents that relate to each suspect.
